A1-Steak Sauce: Lawry’s Defense Problem Statement: A1 Steak Sauce is a brand of Kraft Foods with little competition in the steak sauce market. The product currently has the majority dollar and volume market shares in the steak sauce market. However, unit and volume sales have remained flat. Lawry’s, which is owned by Unilever, has announced an April 1st launch of its own steak sauce. Lawry’s has approached Publix and requesting the Memorial Day ad with a 2-for-$5 price. Now Publix is telling A1 to either match Lawry’s ad or lose its place.Target markets: * The target market for A1 steak sauce consists of educated adults with in the United States who purchase groceries in mass merchandise stores. Since A1 is a premier steak sauce product and our price is considered inelastic due to its high quality, the average household income consists of households with a median income of $60,000. The target market is those men and woman who not only enjoy beef, but enjoy the process of grilling and cooking while adding condiments to their meal.A1 has established a loyal consumer base that prefers quality, they make more than the average household income and their meat of choice is often steak. Product strategy: * Branding / product line: * The current lines of A1 products consist of; Bold & Spicy, Thick & Hearty, Smokey Mesquite and Original. * The steak sauce industry is stagnant and due to the maturity of this product the steak sauce industry must expanded to a potential new market. ( However A1’s RMS = 3. 75) * By focusing our attention on market penetration of the steak sauce we can persuade our loyal consumer base that there is more than one benefit of the steak sauce and that it can be utilized with other meat product; thus equating to more purchases. * Product positioning statement: * â€Å"A1 Sauce controls 50 percent of the market share for a reason; they provide a high quality flavor to all steak and meat products which cannot be replicated by Heinz, Lawry’s or private labels. † * Slogan: â€Å"You deserve the best. † Promotion Strategy: Advertising: 16 Million Budget: Process of allocating prices to combat competition such as Lawry’s while simultaneously growing the steak sauce market itself. * Utilizing a Pulsing advertisement plan where advertisements are shown throughout the year but at very low levels, then boasting the majority of the advertising budget during the summer months when grilling is at its peak. * Lawry’s stating that it is planning to â€Å"†¦spend 20 million on advertising, concentrated in the months of May June and July† (pg. 5) would be completely over shadowed if A1 were to shift to a pulsing marketing strategy rather than a continuous. Strategy: Using a humor appeal, and a testimonial appeal from professional grillers that express there’s no comparison when you want to add the best flavor to your meats. * Television: * Advantages: I t reaches a large target audience, and engages consumers with visual effects. * Since we are following the pulsing strategy in terms of advertising we want to concentrate most of our television exposure in the summer months, while significantly limiting the television ads throughout the rest of the year. TV provides visuals, and ads should concentrate on barbeque scenic grilling events, full of friends and family. Primarily showed during the summer grilling months. * TV: 12Mil * Magazines: * Advertisements in Magazines much like television can be catered to a specific audience. Focusing on common magazine such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN, TIME and FORBES to name a few can garner a lot of the grilling demographic who will be interested in purchasing A1 sauce. * Magazines also provide long-term ad exposure seeing as they can be view periodically throughout the year. Advertisements: Should focus on family grilling events, A1 predominately on the picnic table surrounded by all different meats; including chicken, steak, beef†¦ to emphasize that A1 is a universal product. * Magazines: 2 Mil * Internet: * Utilize Search Engine Optimization to increase traffic towards the main A1 website. * Become more interactive with the consumer on their website; showcase the diverse ways to utilize A1 sauce on different meat products. * â€Å"Lawry’s Live† provides the hottest grilling trends. (pg. 5) * Internet/Online: 2 MilConsumer Promotions: 5. 5 Million * Sweepstakes: Create a way for consumers to become more interactive with the product by creating a sweepstakes to get an entire meal catered by A1, or free A1 sauce for a portion of time. * FSI’s (Free Standing Inserts): An FSI is an advertisement within a group of Ad’s within a print publication (Mass merchandiser Coupons) Utilize these during the prime grilling months such as Labor Day and Fourth of July. (2mil) (1mil each) * Consumer Promotions: 6 Mil Trade Promotion: 23 Million Utilizing P oint of sale displays in checkout lines will prompt consumers to purchase steak sauce. * Acquire higher amount of shelf space to distinguish itself away from the competition, this can be done by utilizing promotional allowances to create discounts. * Maintain the Publix ad by matching Lawry’s 2 for 5 dollar deal during Memorial Day. Obviously Publix will choose A1’s ad over that of Lawry’s due to their close business relationship. * Trade Promotions: 23 Mil Distribution: * Continue supply of A1 sauce to all restaurants to carry on the 9 to 10 ratio. Continue utilizing intensive distribution within all mass merchandisers and grocery stores within the US; maintain the ease of purchase by consumers. (They should never feel like they can’t locate the product) Pricing: * 4. 99 per 10oz bottle. * Utilizing a pricing method on what the competition does specifically Lawry’s. * Using this competition oriented pricing strategy to benchmark A1 sauce is no goo d, maintain price above the competition. * Lawry’s is set to rival A1 sauce yet it is below market standards in price, this should not play a significant factor in purchaser’s decision due to high brand loyalty of the A1 sauce product.

Video Games were once a simple simulation of pong using two lines and a dot for imaging. They were played and mastered by a minority group of individuals most commonly referred to as â€Å"nerds†. Since those days in 1975 the video game industry market has gone through an exponential growth. With the revolutionary changes in technology and the social changes in product demand the gaming industry has transformed into a thriving market with a quickly growing casual gamer demographic. The success of this development in the gaming industry would be little without information technology. Information technology is a fundamental part of the gaming industry. Technology is used to handle information in the gaming industry in both the retail business side as well as the development aspect. When it comes to selling video games there used to only be the store but with the installment of new online technology, games for consumers have been easier to access. Companies like Gamefly enable users to buy and rent games online. Games also can even be instantly purchased over internet through gaming consoles. Microsoft is one company that has taken the most advantage of this concept. From personal experience using Microsoft’s console Xbox 360, the console offers users the ability to create an online account through Xbox Live. From the Xbox Live membership, users gain access to a wide online market of games, videos, and other additional products. The online market is extremely active with some games generating 100,000 trial downloads and 30,000 sales (Garcia, 2011). Despite the quick and easy access these technology features give to gamers the online world is also a threat to the security of games. Copyrights can be cracked, and sometimes games will be distributed over the internet to game users. The security risk the internet plays on games has been tackled by developers who believe cloud computing is the key. In 2009, video game developer Denis Dyack proposed during a panel discussion at GamesBeat that cloud computing would change the industry model of games depending on consoles to games depending on resources that only can be accessed over the internet (Bhanoo, 2009). By holding onto vital resources game developers can prevent the illegal distribution of their game content because the game’s central assets are not downloaded. It would be a good model except one obstacle would be the probability that every game consumer has access to the internet which is highly unlikely, but it is growing to be common in today. These client-to-server concepts and ideas for the retail game industry would all be cases when information technology is used and needed. The gaming industry has a large amount to protect when it comes to distributing its product because unlike other products games are essentially data which is where the real information technology comes into play. The reason why video games are so vulnerable to piracy is because the data in them is not a physical entity but rather information that can be copied and released. Video games essentially can be viewed as an organized system of data and information technology which reacts to input from a user, simulating some type of an event. A look at one popular Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) Game made by Blizzard known as World of Warcraft (WoW) can help demonstrate how complex these transfers of data and information are. Before the user can even begin playing they have to go through an entire sequence of account access authentication and communicate with a server to be verified of account access, and game access as well (Wilson). Once verified that the client computer is the account user and that account user has paid for the ability to the play the game the user selects the server there character is on or a server where they would like to make a new one (Wilson). 4 After character is selected the game play begins. All the data and information about the game graphics and environment are stored on the client’s computer but the server is what does the communication of what gets to be displayed. A more detailed explanation would be the user’s character interacts with picking up an rock once the object is picked up the server communicates to the client’s computer as well as other clients that the rock is no longer there (Wilson). 4 This client-to-server communication is simulated in many aspects of the game such as displaying other clients to the user and simulating a battle. When a client begins to fight with a creature the clients computer communicates both characters’ stats to the server which then uses mathematic algorithms to calculate damage, healing, and any other real-time effects (Wilson). 4 This type of system requires a huge amount of backbone to perform. WoW is estimated to using about 20,000 computer systems and employs more than 4,600 people to keep its gaming experience running (Brice, 2009). While the server communication model used in WoW exhibits its simulation, it is not entirely the same for every video game. Not all games are like WoW, each one can vary with how it stores data and information. It really depends upon how game designers and programs architect the framework of their information technology systems. Systems like Blizzard’s are not on every game and that is because the programs designed to run the games are limited to the company (Wilson). 4 The program and framework of their information systems is the product of a company in the gaming industry and it is something that must be kept secret if the company wants to maintain business. Keeping secrets however, isn’t enough sometimes to stay in the business of the gaming industry. Other competitors can always challenge game developers’ business. The casual gamer is becoming the real market to making business in the gaming industry. There is still a high demand from the hardcore traditional gamer but when it comes to making video games, it is easy to agree it costs less to attract casual gamers with cheaper games. The app era with social networking sites and new technology such as the iPad is becoming a huge thorn to game developers, such as Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, believing that cheap game apps are devaluing the industry (Morris, 2011). With game apps gamers no longer need to spend money as much money for entertainment unless they would like something with a little more depth. The rise of these game apps could be linked to the demand for cheaper products, especially when the economy is still trying to recover. Some developers argue back that the new app technology is not hindering the industry just changing it to a new way that expands the option to the casual gamer who only demands a simple game for entertainment (2010). It is not step back but instead a new branch to be explored and developed. Game apps do play some part in devaluing games but at least they have provided an opportunity for anxious developers to be involved in the game developing community. Either way it’s pursued game development is still a serious business which requires some serious skills with manipulating information. A deeper look into the development view of video games gives a better understanding of the how data and information technology relate to the industry. To understand the development process it is best to start looking at the model used to develop games. When broken down a game is really one big huge project broken down into many others. It starts with the Prototype, then Pre-Production, Production, Beta, and finally the Live finished product (Hendrick, 2009). Now with each of these projects the developers must initialize, plan, execute with monitoring and controlling, and then closing up and finishing (Hendrick, 2009). 8 These projects involve a variety of stages, from concept development to debugging. To be a part of this development process a game developer must be highly trained in whatever aspect they are adding to the project. A game programmer specifically must be able to meet a certain knowledge base criteria with computer languages, the most common one being C++. According to game programmer, Chad Stewart, it is essential that you â€Å"Know Your Stuff† and understand how to think out loud with programming and create program models that can solve real-time problems and game mechanics (Stewart). When being interviewed he states that sometimes you will be presented with problem and must quickly illustrate on a white board how you would approach the problem (Stewart). 10 He also adds that it is important to not be discouraged if you fail the problem and show that you have a willingness to learn and it looks like there is plenty to catch up on (Stewart). 10 From the outside game development can look like a fun job but it is still a job that requires hard work. It can be nerve racking to imagine the amount of knowledge needed to be successful in the gaming industry. There is so much required to build and distribute a single game. That can especially be said for game programmers because they are required to update and learn new technologies. In the gaming industry it can be hard to find an expert that does it all, but one noticeable fact of life to remember is that people are always learning. Multinational Enterprises

Globalization is changing the way of doing business in the world today. It is the new era of business opportunity. For many major companies, going global is a matter of survival, and it means radically changing the way they work. Economic globalization changes both spatial dimension of MNE†s (Multinational Enterprises) and creates a need for more flexible production of marketing systems and new forms of organization. Firms trying to position themselves as global players face problems such as the cost of building a simultaneous presence in several product areas and foreign markets. They must also be able to manage cultural difference and be able to carry out effective cross-cultural communication. Global skills must be an integral part of an enterprise; these skills must be integrated throughout all operations of the company. Managements handling of diversity will be the most significant factor affecting MNE†s success in the global marketplace. Whether a company is concerned about the supervisors of minority employees, world trade, joint ventures or global economic cooperation, culture will have a great impact on the relationships and the operations. Edward H. Schein states it perfectly: Consider any complex, potentially volatile issue-Arab relations, the problems between Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians, corporate decision-making, getting control of U. S. deficit or health care coasts, labor/management relations, and so on. At the root of the issue we are likely to find communication failures and cultural misunderstandings that prevent the parties from framing the problem in a common way, and thus make it impossible to deal with the problem constructively (Schein 40). Every company that becomes global should have global leadership. Culturally skilled leaders are essential for the effective management of emerging global corporations. They should have persons in management that are capable of operating effectively in a global environment and they must be respectful of cultural diversity. In China, the conflict in management has been addressed as a major problem for the global-player, such as US and Chinese joint ventures. Joint ventures are designed to improve and eliminate misunderstanding of global-culture differences in management. Some Chinese and American companies try to adapt to one another, but it is not easy. Both sides have found that cultural difference is difficult to control. For example, Babcock & Wilcox joint-ventured with Grub and Lin. Workers evaluated Chinese managers by a simple standard: who ever quarreled with Americans the most aggressively would be considered comrade in arms, and whoever cooperated with the Americans would be nicknamed â€Å"Er Gui zi† (fake foreigners). The atmosphere became so tense that even the most trivial business dealings between the American and Chinese became bogged down in charges and counter charges (Tse 32). Differences in customs, behavior, and values result is problems that can be managed only through effective cross-cultural communication and interaction. All employees should learn about the about the influence of culture and be effective cross-cultural communicators if they are to work with minorities within their own society or with foreigners encountered home or abroad (Harris and Moran 59). Globalization involves doing business around the world in a new way giving companies an opportunity to explore the world market. The idea of a global-player involves low-cost and new customer. In Asia, Europe, and many other parts of the world, there are thousands of service and product markets waiting to be filled. The Chinese consumer market is one of the most attractive countries for the global-player. The Chinese economy has been growing rapidly in past decade under its â€Å"open-door† policy on foreign trade, investment and finance For example, China is one of the most discussed topics of a business opportunity for global-player around the world. This is because China has a huge and fresh consumer market waiting to be filled; â€Å"China is a major imperative for most big multinationals†. Indeed for some, such as Coca-Cola, Ericson and Procter & Gamble, the country has become one of their largest markets in Asia or even the world† (Edward Tse, 11). China is the third largest country in the world and its population is about 20 percent of the world's population. Since 1979, China has entered the new era of creating an open-door policy to carry out the construction of modernization. Opening the door to the outside world has developed a newly established special economic zone, which is on the coastal area and the area along the Changing River and much more. With the progressive improvement of the investment environment and the completion of laws and regulation concerning foreign affairs, more and more foreign investors have come to China† (Fumio ltoh, 5). As a result, import and export have increased from $20. 6 billion in 1978 to $195 billion US dollars in 1993. From the report of China Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MFTEC), â€Å"during the first seven months of 1997, there were 26 billion U. S. investment dollars flowing into China and it is 15. 5 % gain from last year† (â€Å"Chinoday. com†). China's G. D. P. has been growing at about 9 to 10 percent a year for last 15 years. Since the opening of China, people have been adapting to new cultural values. Chinese consumers are willing to spend more money on purchasing goods and services. Many international products and services have been able to succeed in this revolution because most of the Chinese consumer's decisions are influenced by promoti on, and advertising through television and magazines ads. There are increasing numbers of china's population that own their own televisions. By 1995, official statistics said that more than 80% of Chinese have their own televisions. The advertising spending in China has been growing at around 60% a year since 1990. In a survey, more than half of the people who responded, said that â€Å"television ads influenced their firs-time purchase of the brand they used most often for a home or care products† (Tse, 13). There are a lot of companies have been presented into China, such as Procter & Gamble, S. C. Johnson, Henkel, Unilever and Kao. I believe that companies going to China as a global-players need a powerful global vision to lead their organization into the future success. Arch McGill, the former president of AT&T Advanced Information System said that â€Å"Change in business starts with a vision† (Daniels, 18). Company should have a right global vision address such an important issue, such as how will they serve customer, finding local business partner and geographic concern.

(Brown, 1995) After considering necessary legislations, managers who may have the goodwill to accommodate women fairly in their organisations may face obstacles in the process of trying to make sure that the latter group grow in their careers. Currently, the Chinese government has not instituted laws that allow child care provisions for married women. The lack of support from government legislations could bring problems to its implementation. This is the reason why China still ranks low in terms of women representation at the workplace. Compared to other developed countries, the number of married women in China' workforce is only forty eight percent. Although this is a slight improvement from what it was in the late 90s, the percentage is still low for a developed country. Employers need to realise that there is still some lack of support for women's incentives in employment. They will therefore have difficulties when trying to provide women with incentives for their families since support systems like child care facilities are still lacking in China. Sexual preference Managers trying to implement equal opportunities in China may be faced with the problem of dealing with sexual preference issues. The Chinese society is quite conservative in this regard. It is only recently that the Chinese government changed their laws, just a few years ago, the country used to consider homosexuality a crime. This does not mean that there is open discrimination in the workplace against gay men and women.

However, the poets use different concepts to address their points. Allen Curnow uses time with concrete and abstract images of the real world. On the other hand, Adrienne Rich uses descriptions on the moon. Language indicates the distinctiveness of how words are used by the poets. In these two poems, both of the poets use a variety of language techniques to present their ideas on the notion. They both have chosen repetition and diction for their pieces of poetry. In ‘Time’, the world ‘I am’ (refers to time) is repeated throughout the poem for many times. This gives the effects of highlighting how powerful time is. Metaphor is used in the last stanza: ‘Am island, am sea, am father, farm, and friend’. The images that time is compared to are categorized as nature (island, sea) and human (father, friend). Consequently, it also suggests the relationship between human and nature. Personification in the poem ‘Amends’ is present through the descriptions on movements of the moon. Words like: ‘picks’, ‘licks’, ‘flicks’, ‘pours’, ‘leans’ etc. implies the gentleness of the actions. This poem is about the progress of a moving moon, traveling, looking down from the sky to care for every little thing on Earth. Therefore, the verbs personify the actions of the moon, make it seems like a kind and cautious person. Metaphor is also emphasized in the last stanza of this poem. The imagery of how the moon ‘dwells upon the eyelids of the sleepers’ suggests how the moon looks after the sleepers – reference to human beings. The connotation of ‘dwells’ is to live; ‘eyelids’ are the vulnerable and very thin skin that covers our eyes. The metaphor meaning of this phrase is to suggest that the moon will always be with us, to protect us especially when things turn hard and we become weak. This has a special link to the metaphysical idea as the moon can be a symbol of nature and here we have a special connection with humanity as the fact that mother nature will always look out for us is present using imagery in this poem. Finally, the two poets creatively succeeded in forming/structuring their poems in many unique ways. However, they have one similarity in doing that, which is the use of enjambment. In ‘Time’, enjambment is widely used in the first 4 stanzas. After each sentence, there is no punctuation, therefore the reason for this can be suggested as the poet wants the readers to keep on reading. This is a smart way to indicate how time passes. Time does not wait for anyone or anything, it keep on moving unstoppable. That might be the reason why Allen Curnow has chosen to use enjambment in this poem. In this poem, Adrienne Rich uses this technique of structuring to reflect movements of the moon. There are two main flow arrangements which are parallel-flow and counter-current-flow. In parallel-flow heat exchangers, the two fluids enter the exchanger at the same end, and travel in parallel to one another to the other side. In counter-flow heat exchangers the fluids enter the exchanger from opposite ends. Compared both flow arrangements, the counter current design is most efficient, in that it can transfer the most heat from the heat transfer medium. 3.1.2 Types of Heat Exchanger There are many types of heat exchanger in industry. The types chosen based on the function of the heat exchanger itself. Spending 9 months in U.K. and observing the British medical system and having traveled all over Europe and Scandinavia has enhanced my communication skills. In medical school I found that hard work was not a burden but a pleasure. I felt at home in the hospital. For most people rocks are only beautiful if polished up and set in gold or silver. I am certainly no exception, however, I am often intrigued by the lower class of rocks. It takes a child, or an adult in touch with their inner child, to find the potential of the average, dirt covered rock. Through the eyes of a child, each rock takes on a personality, be it a country cousin or a snooty countess. Come through the eyes of a child and experience the beauty and majesty of a rock, from the simple stone to the classy diamond. On our daily journeys we often pass by the humblest of rocks, those that decorate our gardens, or the ones that are simply buried in the dirt at the park. Most of us see a rock, if we see it all. These quiet stones are the lowest caste of the rock world, but they do not lack their own impressiveness. They come in all shapes and sizes, from large and smooth, to small with jagged edges. They even come in different colors and patterns, swirled greys, and pale creams, deep browns, and smooth reds. Like fingerprints, or people themselves, no rock is like any other. These rocks are a chid’s friend, another door to the imagination. Children use them to build houses for gnomes, and pretend they are people. We adults simply smile and indulge the child, never once looking beyond the rock. Yet sometimes I find myself imagining this plain grey rock’s journey.
